Malaysia and Cambodia

Hello,

This is about my upcoming trip to Malaysia and Cambodia. The first part is pre-trip - information about flights, itineraries, accommodation and all the things that you need to do to plan an overseas holiday. This is my first trip to Asia and I hope it may help others. Comments are very welcome and anyone who has travelled to Malaysia and/or Cambodia, please feel free to comment and offer any advice or tips that you think would be helpful. As of today ( 28th February) , in exactly 11 days (minus 30 minutes) I will be in Kuala Lumpur.
Cheers.

I had the most amazing time and hope you enjoy reading about my trip. Each post is numbered and I'm doing them in order from start to finish - a little like a diary.

84. Penang Heritage Trail

Penang Heritage & Trishaw Tour
Arriving back at the hotel, I had a quick shower in order to be ready for the second tour which was due to start at 2.00pm and run for approx 4 hours. I was ready, my guide was ready, but the trishaw driver was late - about 25 minutes late. Anyway we started off and below are some of the heritage buildings I saw.

Above: Convent Light Street School
Convent Light Street, (the convent of the Holy Infant Jesus) was founded by three French nuns of the Holy Infant Jesus Mission - Sister Appolinaire, Sister Gaetau and Sister Gregoire, who arrived in Penang in 1852. It is the oldest girls school in Penang and Malaysia.

Initially an orphange, the Nuns took in unwanted babies of every race and background and it wasl also as a boarding school for the daughters of the upper classes - even daughters of royal families and wealthy families from as far as Thailand. As the school grew, it became necessary to move to larger premises. Today, Convent Light Street has been integrated into the national education system.

This gated stone monument stands by the sea at the intersection of Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah and Jalan Padang Kota Lama in the heart of George Town, Penang. The War Memorial was erected by the British to commemorate the brave soldiers who sacrificed themselves in The Battle of Penang during World War I.

The Penang War Memorial is a George Town UNESCO Heritage Site.

Above: Fort Cornwallis
Originally built of bakau wood, Fort Cornwallis is the place where Captain Francis Light first arrived in Penang on 16th July 1786. The fortress was rebuilt in stone later on. Situated at the Esplanade, the fort houses a gunpowder bunker, a chapel and a small lighthouse. There are also a lot of old canons located inside the fortress.

Francis Light first landed at this very spot to "conquer" Penang Island in 1786 and to date, it is the most well preserved fort in West Malaysia. Within the walls of the fort is a remarkable cannon called Seri Rambai. It is famed for its procreative powers, and childless women place flowers in the barrel of the cannon and offer special prayers.

Above: Queen Victoria Memorial Clocktower
The Queen Victoria Memorial Clocktower at King Edward's Place is one of the most recognizable icons of Penang Island.
The Victoria Memorial Clocktower at King Edward Place, Penang, was built by local Penang millionaire Cheah Chen Eok in 1897 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee (sixtieth year) of the Queen's reign. The tower is 60 foot tall, each foot of the tower is dedicated to each year of Queen Victoria’s reign.

Above: Frank Swettenham Pier
The pier was completed in 1904 and named after Sir Frank Swettenham who was the first Resident General of the Federated Malay States (part of the then Royal Colonies, now independent Malaysia) which was formed by combining a number of kingdoms. He served from July 1, 1896 to 1901.

Above: Church Street Pier
The Church Street pier was built in 1897 when Penang Channel was a busy waterway. It was used by cars and small boats until the new ferry terminal was built and it closed down and was neglected for many years. It has recently been refurbished and restored.
